May 28, 2012 Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens

I had a wonderful opportunity a few weeks ago.  Two friends invited me to join them on a trip to Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens in Humble, TX.  We didn’t have time to visit the arboretum side of the park—we spent all day wandering in the fabulous botanic gardens.

This is another of the gems hidden in plain sight around Livingston, TX.  We have passed the sign pointing to the Mercer Botanic Gardens for 20 years—always with the thought of “some day.”

Dianne is an award-winning photographer and Carol is an award-winning artist.  What did I bring to that party?  I love looking at other people’s gardens and taking photos.  Do you have time to look at 40 or 50 photos??  No? Okay, I will only share a few!

Successful gardens need

little nooks,

inviting pathways,

cool-looking water features,

picturesque B & Bs to attract singing birds,

as well as Water Lilies galore to shelter goldfish.

Southern gardens need columns to set the mood,

butterfly gardens to attract photographers,

and flowers to attract gardeners--

lots of colorful flowers.

But, most important are the benches—lots of benches—for resting!

Because after four or five hours wandering around, we were tired!

So, if you are ever in the Houston-Humble, TX, area, don’t wait 20 years to visit the Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens.  Did I mention it is free?  Go and enjoy this little snippet of beauty at the edge of the big city. We sure did.
